Challanges of SOA
1)Good SOA requires good Governance
2)More complexity
3)Reuse
4)Process- teams might require to learn new development techniques.
5)Team Communication
Technology Adoption of SOA:-
Incremental adoption
big Bang
Well known practices to help an organization adopt a new technology:-
Pilot Project:
Pioneering team
Lessons learned
Incremental development
SOA Projects
characteristics of a SOA pilot project
a) address a well understood business problem
b) incorporate aspects of governance
c) include line of business objectives and IT objectives
d) leverage the entry points to SOA
e) Require an achievable stretch beyond current capabilities to address gaps.
f) if sucessful should be put into production
SOA has struck me :)
Apr 10 2008
What is SOA??
Essentially, SOA is a better way to develop software, by using the basic building blocks of "services." Services are self-contained, stateless business functions, each of which accepts requests and returns responses through a well-defined, standard interface.
Business Reasons to adopt SOA:-
a) improve b2c communications
b) improve b2b communications
c) flexibility
d) code reuse
e)improve integration of existing apps
f) provide new revenue opportunities
Does your business require SOA??
checklist:-
1. Accelerate time to market
2. Reduce costs
3. Reduce risk and dependencies(Does business do same thing in different ways)
4. Organizational Readiness:- Perhaps the business needs SOA but that doesnt automatically
mean that its ready to adopt SOA. An SOA project can easily fail if the organization
isnt ready for SOA.
a) Executive support and sponsorship
b) Skills - is the staff skilled to support SOA??
5.Current architecture and environments
6. Operational readiness: More flexibility more parts more complexity :)
IBM has SOA readiness assesment that helps its organizations discover its maturity level
for SOA adoption.
Prisoner's Dilemma to Movies
Mar 10 2008
What is Prisoner's Dilemma?
Two suspects, A and B, are arrested by the police. The police have insufficient evidence for a conviction, and, having separated both prisoners, visit each of them to offer the same deal: if one testifies for the prosecution against the other and the other remains silent, the betrayer goes free and the silent accomplice receives the full 10-year sentence. If both remain silent, both prisoners are sentenced to only six months in jail for a minor charge. If each betrays the other, each receives a five-year sentence. Each prisoner must make the choice of whether to betray the other or to remain silent. However, neither prisoner knows for sure what choice the other prisoner will make. So this dilemma poses the question: How should the prisoners act?
The Same Scenario repeats in movies. Instead of Prisoner's , we have Hero and Villian, each having other's most wanted thing(lets call this X) with equal payoff's(ideal case)negotiate with eachother for common good. If Hero and Villian eXchange their X , they reach a common good. If both defect, they are at extreme loss. If either defects, the other one wins.
But here, we know for sure that the HERO is a good person and villian symbolises evil. So there are less chance of villian agreeing to the hero. so even if HERO gives what the villian wants, he may not get his X. So its in the better interest of the hero to trap villian rather than villian trapping hero and not giving X but isn't hero become a villian now. Yes, HERO becomes a villian if its for common good :). So what do you think?
Freakonomics of Productivity
Feb 27 2008
Did you ever imagined that chair to desk height effects productivity???
It is infact. Though the height varies from person to person [depending on his/her features].
I leave the rest for your imagination :)
Should law treat everyone equally??
Feb 26 2008
Men are not born equal. Some are born amidst riches and some
in poverty. Some are prodigies and some are morons. Some are
genious and some imbeciles.Even
the earth isn't created equal. There are crests, troughs, water, mountains
life, nolife(deserts) etc.,.
Men are moulded by the environment of their upbringing.
We dont have an universal currency or universal law. Does the
Law take into account of the changing situations. How many
ammendments have been made? Whom did they effect? The powerless few.
Believe it or not, the world is driven by powermongers, incessantly
in need for power and money, acting toady , mending rules and much more.
It has got a general acceptance with no revolt. Freedom was achieved
in name sake and is realised only when we achieve the equality
in every phase of life. Can it be achieved?
Considering the above, Should law treat everyone equally?
The Mystery Market
Feb 23 2008
I would say that share market as the mystery market.
Its volatile and highly unpredictable. There are people who earned
a fortune and there are people who lost all their life earnings.
For some its very abstruse and for some its the way of life.
Many people say that investing in stocks is better than other investments.
Is it really the one? Well, people quote Warren Buffet who started with $100 investment
and now a millionare. The same people never quote about the people who have lost lots of
money in stocks.
Is investing in stocks a better option?
Investing in stocks requires a financial discipline. Are you willing to spend atleast
10hrs of your time / week in analysing and following stock market? Are you willing
to learn/analyse and invest rather than following third person opinion? If the
answer to both the question is yes, then investing in stocks is definetely a
good option. So think again , before you invest in stocks.
Understanding Stocks
Feb 15 2008Recently my interest in Stocks grew exponentially and wanted to kickstart stock information. I was googling for stock related books and found an awesome book Understanding Stocks . This books starts with basics introducing the origins of stocks/ stocks/bonds/mutual funds and other investing options. It slowly moves on to how to evaluate/analyize and select stocks that will give good returns. A nice introductory book that I would recommend for any person who wants to delve into stock market.
Mr Valentine as Economist
Feb 14th 2008
Mr Valentine wanted to draw the supply demand curve for guys and gals with
price paid being love
Keeping all eXternal factors constant, it follows the
normal X pattern and we can find a guy and girl , who love eachother equally.
If the guy pays more love for the girl, it might result in possessiveness from the guy
and might result in a marriage wreck. If the guy pays less love for the girl, it might
result in, he looking for better options and another marriage wreck. If they wont
marry eachother, they are at the starting point. In all the above cases they will retrace to
the starting point(ie finding opposite sex).
so how does the other eXternal factors affect the curve?
Probability comes into play and says that 60%(assumed figure) of the marriages will turn
out good. So the remaining 40% will do the swapping. They follow the pattern until they get the
person they desired/destined for or they eventually die.
Till now we considered that women and men are in equal number but its not.
Men outnumber Women. So there is always a surplus of men available.
Men's Case: Less number of women , and demand is more resulting in a more price to pay.
Women's Case: More number of men , and demand is less(ppl care too much about finer details)
so there is a less price to pay.
Tip from Mr Valentine
If you want to keep your gal, buy her a eXpensive gift and eXpect a less eXpensive gift from gal.
PS: This is written as a fun exercise.Dont take it seriously :)
Applicability of CobWeb Theory to Stocks
Feb 13th 2008CobWeb Theory is based on the principle that price changes of the recent past drive the current price movements in a converging way when other things are kept constant. If there is a change in the value of the other determinants, the change will drive the price movement towards a different point of convergence.
Applying the same theory to stock markets, The price and quantity will travel a converging path and we should be able to
define the ideal price for the stock.
Yes.... you are right , we forgot the determinants. The determinants keep changing,so its the accurate prediction of the determinants
and evaluating them will help us identifying the ideal price of the stock.
Sounds fair, but can we determine the accurately predict the variations in determinants???
Not so... So CobWeb Theory will be just a guestimate but not an ideal price.
Proved beyond doubt :)
Predatory Pricing - Shame on Intel
Feb 12th 2008Predatory Pricing or below-cost pricing is a technique used by large companies to maintain monopoly , thwarting its rivals. Eg Intel is using this strategy to twart AMD's chips.
EU charged Intel with monopoly abuse for below-cost customer rebates and pricing, saying those actions undercut smaller rival computer chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. In addition, Intel is alleged to have made payments to manufacturers to get them to delay or cancel product lines using AMD chips and that it sold its own chips below average cost to strategic server customers -- such as governments and universities -- when bidding against AMD-based products.
EU says below-cost or predatory pricing may be good for shoppers in the short term but ultimately harms them by killing off rivals that would offer more choice and set a faster pace for innovationI second EU :) and Intel should be punished for this
